JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – With hurricane season already underway, insurance can be a lifeline after a storm.
But many homeowners may not realize what their policies don’t cover — until it’s too late.
When a storm hits, most people assume insurance will help them bounce back.
But experts say many homeowners don’t fully understand their coverage or their responsibilities after a storm.
“A lot of people don’t quite understand what their coverages are, what their duties are, and what their rights are when pursuing a claim,” said Gina Clausen Lozier, an insurance attorney.
That starts with knowing what’s actually in your policy.
Standard homeowners’ insurance typically covers your home and other structures even temporary living costs if damage forces you out.
But Lozier says there’s a major gap most people miss.
“Your standard homeowner’s policy does not cover flood. That is a separate policy. And I think that’s a big misconception,” she said.
And it’s not just what’s covered, it’s what you have to do, too.
After a storm, policyholders are required to notify their insurer quickly and document everything.
“Take pictures, keep records, cooperate with the insurance company, those are just basic duties after loss,” Lozier said.
And if you think you can automatically sue your insurer if things go wrong — think again.
“Many policies now require arbitration instead of court,” Lozier said. “That’s a big change a lot of people don’t expect.”
Experts say it’s worth checking your policy now — before a storm hits — and getting help from a trusted insurance agent or licensed professional if you’re unsure.
