The Traffic Unit is investigating; however, preliminary information shows the UPS driver had the right of way, the Sheriff’s Office said.
He was airlifted to a hospital and was listed in critical but stable condition. The Sheriff’s Office said he wasn’t wearing a helmet.
Bill Doolittle works in the neighborhood and often notices the ebikers and escooters.
“I think that the kids should not be on those things at this age,” Doolittle said.
This latest crash comes as the St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office and the St. Johns County School District are teaming up to educate students about e-bike safety.
“One thing that was missing was the call to action that I did before and I believe the sheriff did involving the parents. Knowing what you buy before you buy,” Patrol Director Russ Martin said.
Crashes involving electric motorized devices more than doubled from eight in all of 2024 to 20 in the first five months of 2025.
During a county commission meeting on Tuesday, the school district said it initially plans to implement a classroom curriculum on e-bike safety in 17 district middle schools by Christmas.
“I really see this expanding into more things as we progress,” Paul Abbatinozzi, the chief of staff of SJCSD said.
