Florida makes hurricane prep more affordable with year-round tax exemptions

Permanent sales tax break on emergency supplies replaces seasonal holidays, encouraging early readiness

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – As Florida enters the heart of hurricane season, residents are getting a financial break on the essentials they need to stay safe. A new, permanent sales tax exemption on key hurricane supplies has replaced the state’s traditional short-term sales tax holidays.

We’re well into hurricane season here in Florida. Many home improvement stores, like this Lowe’s, have set up dedicated ‘hurricane pods’—displays that showcase the most essential emergency supplies.

These displays typically feature items like generators, air conditioners, gas tanks, flashlights, and batteries—all of which now qualify for year-round tax exemption. Store managers say it’s more than just a deal—it’s a wake-up call.

“As the tax-free event comes up for our customers, it definitely creates a heightened awareness about being prepared,” Brian Daniel said, Lowe’s store manager. “Even shoppers who walk in unaware are met with prominent displays and signage to get them thinking—and buying—before the storm hits.”

Florida’s heat is another factor.

“If the power goes out, staying cool is critical,” Daniel added. “That’s why we include portable air conditioners, coolers, waterproof containers for documents, and other essentials.”

For longtime residents like David May, preparedness is second nature. May moved to Florida ten years ago and learned the importance of storm readiness through personal experience.

“Eight years ago, I bought a generator during the tax holiday and loaded up on batteries,” May recalled. “Now I stock up every year—water, batteries…you have to be ready.”

He also pointed out that having a generator isn’t just a nice-to-have—it’s vital.

“Even if you’re not using it often, it’s peace of mind. I had one for ice storms up north. Here, it’s hurricanes. No matter where you live, you need some urgency,” May said.

Thanks to the new permanent tax exemption, that urgency is now a little easier—and more affordable—for Floridians to act on.
