JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – On Saturday, dozens of family, friends and community supporters gathered in front of the Duval County Jail for a peaceful protest for Charles Faggart and are demanding accountability from the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office.
Nearly four months ago, Faggart died while in JSO custody after being involved in an unspecified incident inside the jail with nine officers.
The protesters said they want to know all the details surrounding his death and they won’t stop until that happens.
Faggart’s mother, Tracy Karpas spoke in front of the crowd, saying it’s been nearly four months since her son died and she doesn’t know why.
The mother of Faggart’s son told the crowd how he’s been doing since he lost his father.
“Our six-year-old now wears noise-canceling headphones literally everywhere he goes because he is stuck in a place of mourning that no child belongs in,” Caitlyn Benz said. “We were at the grave last night at midnight actually because he was inconsolable, missing his father.”
The organizers are hosting a vigil Saturday night for families and friends who have lost loved ones or experienced trauma as a result of police actions.
“We’re here to keep the light on the brutality,” Ian Fayce, an organizer, said.
