ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – St. Johns County Schools is kicking off the new school year with fresh leadership at the top. Dr. Brennan Asplen is the district’s new superintendent, stepping in after Tim Forson retired at the end of June.
The school board unanimously approved a three-year contract for Asplen several weeks before he officially began his role July 1.
His base salary is $225,000, with potential raises tied to annual performance reviews. The board and superintendent will set goals each year, and Asplen’s performance will be evaluated across eight categories and 37 subcategories.
If he meets expectations, his raise will match the percentage increase given to district instructional staff that year. The board can also request an interim evaluation in December.
Asplen is eligible for additional salary enhancements, including $2,000 annually for maintaining certification requirements and $3,000 for holding a Chief Executive Officer Leadership Certificate.
He receives a $900 monthly car allowance, which is separate from his base salary. The district will also reimburse him for any expenses incurred on its behalf.
The contract includes coverage for an annual “executive physical,” which should include a stress test, blood work and an EKG.
The board encourages Asplen to join professional groups that support the district’s work, covering up to $1,000 a year in membership fees with board approval.
