Over 4 inches of rain falls in St. Augustine in just over an hour, leaves many downtown areas ‘flooded’

NORTHEAST FLORIDAThe National Weather Service for Jacksonville is reporting on Wednesday that over 4 inches of rain fell in St. Augustine in just over an hour, which has caused flooding in much of the city’s downtown area.

“Near the Cathedral Basilica has reported 4.35 inches of rain that has fallen since 4:30 p.m.,” NWS said on social media. “Also, Davis Shores has reported 3.54 inches in the same time period.”

The report comes moments after the agency administered a flash flood warning for St. Johns County through 6:45 p.m; however, the warning was canceled just before 6 p.m.

There were also reports of mothball-sized hail in St. Augustine along US-1.

Flood advisories were also issued for Duval, Clay, and Putnam counties earlier on Wednesday afternoon. For Clay and Putnam, they were in effect until 7:30 p.m.

In Jacksonville, which saw its fair share of rain, flood-prone areas like San Marco saw high waters caused by rain leave some cars stuck on the road.

And in Clay County, nearly 7,000 residents had to deal with power outages after storms rolled through the area.

More rainfall fell throughout the evening as slow-moving thunderstorms settled over Northeast Florida.
