JEFFERSON COUNTY, Fla. – Governor Ron DeSantis unveiled a statue of Thomas Jefferson Wednesday morning in Jefferson County to mark the start of the country’s 250th anniversary celebrations.
DeSantis unveiled the statue during a news conference and said additional statues of historical figures will be unveiled throughout the year.
“I think here in Jefferson County, I think it’s appropriate to be able to have a statute that that’s been provided by the State of Florida so people can see the namesake and really study, and particularly for young people, think about some of the major issues that they were dealing with at the time, how he navigated independence, how he navigated some of these things, really, really significant history,” DeSantis said.
DeSantis said the state is working on statues of Alexander Hamilton, James Madison and Benjamin Franklin.
“We’re not just going to only do counties that have namesakes. We think that America’s 250th is important to celebrate in a wide variety of ways across all of Florida,” DeSantis said.
