Green Cove Springs city leaders consider 12% electric rate hike after rejecting higher increase

GREEN COVE SPRINGS, Fla. – More than a month after Green Cove Springs council members shot down a 20% increase in electric rates, they will now vote on whether to approve a 12% increase for residents.

City officials explained that prior to 2024, the city had not raised electric rates for nearly nine years.

As costs have risen, the city’s electric rates have remained stagnant, creating a financial shortfall.

At Tuesday night’s City Council meeting, members are expected to vote on an ordinance that would take effect Wednesday.

The ordinance would include a 12% increase, with a promise of no additional hikes for the 2026 fiscal year.

City leaders are encouraging residents to come out, ask questions and share their feedback at a meeting at 6 p.m. Tuesday at City Hall ahead of the council vote. They will also discuss energy-saving programs and customer support options to help manage bills.

If approved, the following changes would take effect this week:

Monthly Customer Service Charge

  • Residential Customers: Increases from $16.50 to $18.48 on July 2, 2025
