JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Duval County School Board is set to vote on a proposed comprehensive initiative called “Duval Reimagine,” an 81-page strategic blueprint that could reshape the district’s approach to school infrastructure and student distribution.
The plan extends beyond immediate facility improvements, outlining a strategic approach guided by four key priorities: Enrollment and Capacity, Educational Adequacy, Financial Alignment, and Facility Condition.
Several schools across the district face timeline changes for their improvement projects. For example, San Jose Elementary School’s renovation and classroom addition project is potentially being accelerated to address overcrowding issues. Meanwhile, Brookview Elementary School’s maintenance work faces a delay, with the board proposing shifting the timeline from 2026-27 to 2029-34 due to district-wide reprioritization.
The plan introduces the possibility of boundary adjustments following school consolidations and closures. Key considerations for these changes include:
- Walkability
- Demographics
- Specialized programs
- Safety measures
Tiffany Clark, a parent leader with Parents Who Lead, draws parallels between this initiative and previous efforts like the “Bold New Plan” from several years ago.
“Just trying to find out exactly what schools are going to be impacted, who’s moving up in terms of renovations, projects and things like that, and who’s potentially, kind of at a pause or at a standstill right now.”
She also highlighted the importance of understanding changing dynamics in Jacksonville.
“As we come up with this new capital plan, as we look at being reimagined, what are families actually doing? Are they getting married? Are they having children? Are they raising children? And then at the core of that, the families, are they making DCPS their number one choice?” she said.
Katie Hathaway, another DCPS parent, also hoped that DCPS would consider making a plan that would work well for all families.
“Our public schools are the hearts of our communities, and we need to make sure that our board is doing whatever they have to do in a manner that’s equitable for every community, every zip code, for every child,” she said.
DCPS intends to vote on the “Duval Reimagine” plan on Tuesday. When asked about the plan’s funding and implementation strategy, district representative Laureen Ricks said those details would be available following board approval.
