Florida test scores show gains for Duval; top marks for St. Johns, Nassau counties

DCPS says Duval County test scores improvements ‘show promise’

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Florida’s latest standardized test results are out, revealing how local school districts performed on the Florida Assessment of Student Thinking, or FAST.

St. Johns County and Nassau County led the region with the highest overall scores in both math and English language arts.

Duval County did not rank among the top scorers but showed improvements compared to last year. The district’s math scores rose from 48% to 53%, while English language arts increased from 46% to 50%.

Katie Hathaway is a Duval County parent who shared her insights on the scores.

INTERACTIVE STORY: Here’s how our local public school districts fared on 2025 statewide tests

“As a parent, I see how hard our teachers work every day to ensure student success and growth, and I’m really proud of the gains that Duval County has made this year. But I also don’t think that we can measure everything based on a single test. I mean, obviously we need accountability and ways to measure student achievement, but it does a disservice to the good work that’s being done every single day in our classrooms, if you just look at one test.”

News4JAX contacted Duval County Public Schools about the test scores. Laureen Ricks, a district representative, shared this statement:

“The test scores show promise. They are just one of several components that make up school and district grades, and we look forward to the release of this data in the near future.”

Hathaway also emphasized the importance of a broader education focus.

“We should not just be raising test takers. We need to be raising good humans. We need to be raising critical thinkers, problem solvers, compassionate citizens, and that’s what our education system should reflect, and you can’t put that onto a standardized test.”
