CLAY COUNTY, Fla. – The family of the Clay County man shot by deputies is calling for more transparency about the incident.
Clay County Sheriff Michelle Cook said the incident began earlier this week on Monday when the CCSO responded to Indian Trail to attempt to serve a warrant to Dajshon Asbell for violation of probation.
Cook said he was uncooperative and tried to stab a deputy with a syringe. After the fight, he ran off.
The sheriff’s office issued additional assault charges and another warrant that they attempted to serve on Friday around 3:45 p.m.
When deputies arrived, Asbell ran into a utility building with his girlfriend and refused to come out.
Cook said deputies could hear the girlfriend asking to leave, but Asbell refused to let her out.
Deputies began negotiating with him, but he constantly refused. Eventually, they threw gas into the building to get him out, but he still remained inside.
It took four to five hours of attempted negotiations. The deputies tried to break down the door.
Asbell, according to Cook, then ran out of the building with a sharp object in his hand, attempting to stab the deputies.
He grabbed a K-9 unit and made stabbing motions toward the dog. At least three deputies shot at Asbell with non-lethal ammunition.
He still attempted to fight against them as he was taken into custody.
The K-9 did not appear to be injured.
The man was taken to the hospital.
After listening to Cook’s briefing, Asbell’s family said they were left with lots of questions they haven’t been able to get answered, and they feel that’s not right.
“There’s too many conflicting stories,” Jimmy Scriven, a relative of Asbell said.
Asbell’s sister didn’t believe her brother was able to grab the K-9 like Cook said he did.
“To be precise, there’s no way for someone to grab a K-9, lets just be honest about that. You cannot grab a trained police K-9 and make stabbing motions. It’s an aggressive dog,” Shakieria Peterson said.
She said the family is calling for more transparency.
“My brother is not a bad person and I won’t let anybody paint him out to be that,” Peterson said.
The CCSO released a statement after the family said they feel there are inconsistencies.
“FDLE is the investigating agency, if the family feels there are inconsistencies, we need to wait until the conclusion of FDLE’s investigation and witness accounts,” Peterson said.
It’s unclear what additional charges will be added.
