COLUMBIA COUNTY, Fla. – A Columbia County Detention Facility inmate died in a hospital Thursday night after deputies found them unresponsive inside their cell, according to the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office.
Around 7:20 p.m., deputies were doing cell checks and found the inmate unresponsive, experiencing a “medical distress,” according to the sheriff’s office.

Deputies immediately began lifesaving measures and continued until first responders arrived.
The inmate was then transported to a local hospital and died about an hour later, deputies said.
Preliminary information does not suspect any foul play, according to the sheriff’s office.
Deputies did not identify the inmate as they were still in the process of notifying their family.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) is in charge of the investigation.
“The Columbia County Sheriff’s Office sends its condolences to the family during their tragic loss of a loved one,” the sheriff’s office wrote in a release.
