JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Jacksonville Equestrian Center, a beloved facility on the city’s westside, is in need of significant upgrades following several years of deferred maintenance.
During a recent city council finance committee meeting, council members highlighted the center’s needs and discussed potential support.
The sprawling property on Normandy Boulevard offers a unique experience for visitors and serves as an important community resource. Events are held year-round, and most are free to the public, including rodeos.
Jodi Coxwell, a member of the Northeast Florida Equestrian Society Board of Directors, and Candice Barnes, the Assistant Executive Director, shared insights into the center’s needs.
“The building is over 20 years old,” Barnes said. “We are just grateful that the city council is recognizing us and is going to give us attention and help us support the community.”
The estimated cost for necessary upgrades, including lighting, roads, and stalls, could reach $1.4 million. Coxwell emphasized the importance of safety.
“Our stalls are missing clay underneath them, and a lot of places, I just want it safe for the community, safe for those that are bringing their horses in,” Coxwell said.
In addition to housing these animals and hosting popular, family-friendly events, the Equestrian Center serves as an evacuation site for equine and small livestock during storms. Barnes highlighted the importance of maintaining the facility, especially given the potential for damage during severe weather.
“When the storm gets pretty bad, even our afternoon summer storms, the wind gets pretty rapid and can cause damage,” Barnes said.
One of the center’s most cherished programs is H.O.R.S.E Therapies, which provides individuals with cognitive and physical challenges the opportunity to connect with horses. It is funded through donations, sponsorships, and grants.
“This child with autism had not spoken in many years, and he said his first word on the back of one of our horses,” Barnes shared, illustrating the program’s impact.
Jacksonville City Council members indicated legislation to support the Equestrian Center is in the works. As the city considers how to address the center’s needs, the focus remains on ensuring it continues to serve as a valuable community asset.
The Jacksonville Equestrian Center holds a special place in the hearts of many, and efforts to secure necessary upgrades are underway.
