JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Mayor’s Young Leaders Advisory Council had its year-end celebration for the program’s high school seniors as they go to college and other endeavors.
MYLAC is a youth-led organization that works with the mayor’s office to give back to the community. It’s composed of 50 high school juniors and seniors. The students are given the opportunity to learn more about city government and effective citizenship to make a difference as young leaders.
The city council also shares ideas with city officials and advises on issues facing Jacksonville youth.
They organize events and engage with people within Jacksonville.
Kayleigh Gutierriez, a senior who went through the program, talked about her favorite project that she worked on.
“It was the Blue Zones project...we were able to host a book drive where we handed out hundreds of books to various families and little kids. I was able to make sock puppets or little reading buddies with the children, and it was just a really joyous and fun time,” Gutierriez said.
She said going through the program has helped with her speaking and interpersonal skills.
“It has given me a platform to be able to talk about homelessness and talk about education disparities within our community with other like-minded individuals has just really expanded my own personal skills and personal abilities,” Gutierriez said.
Leonard Chatman Jr. is an author and motivational speaker. He was the keynote speaker for the event and talked about the importance of building strong relationships.
“Everything is about relationships, so be mindful of how you choose to use your energy with people,” Chatman said.
