JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Two weeks after a devastating fire broke out in the hourly parking garage at the Jacksonville International Airport, dozens of cars remained in structurally compromised areas and could not be removed.
The Jacksonville Aviation Authority said on Friday that approximately 60 cars were still parked in inaccessible areas on the third and fourth floors and “cannot be removed at this time.”

The JAA also said the inaccessible area on the third floor of the parking garage was decreased on Thursday, allowing them to safely relocate approximately 47 additional cars.
According to JAA, those car owners were contacted by the call center to let them know their cars were available for pickup.
Since May 16, JAX employees and volunteers have tried to contact the owners of all the vehicles that are in accessible areas of the garage.
However, on Wednesday, authorities said there were still some cars in the garage that were available for pickup, but had not been claimed by their owners.
JAA also said that there were a number of vehicles remaining for which they don’t have contact information for the owner.
The call center closed on Friday at 1 p.m., but car owners can still reach the airport via email at jax_airport_event@flyjax.com.
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), the leading investigative agency, said last week it was still working on determining the cause and origin of the fire.
