GLYNN COUNTY, Fla. – A Brunswick family is seeking answers after a hit-and-run crash took someone they loved, who was left injured on the side of the road for more than 12 hours.
Paige Cargile, said her dad Tracy Shannon Cargile, 57, died Monday at UF Health Jacksonville, following being hit when a vehicle struck him May 22, along Highway 82.
“He fought as hard as he could and Monday night his little body just couldn’t fight anymore,” Paige said.
Paige said her dad started walking after he drove over something and got a flat tire on Highway 99, and then made it to Highway 82 where he got hit.
Dashcam footage from a passing motorist captured what may be the last images of Cargile walking along Highway 82 before the incident.
Paula Cargile showed News4JAX her call records from Thursday night, showing she spoke to Shannon for four minutes and eight seconds. That’s when Shannon told his family members about the vehicle trouble. When he failed to return home, the family reported him missing to the police.
The following day, before noon, authorities notified the family of his discovery.
“When I got the call, the officer just got on the phone and said we found your dad and he’s been run over,” Paige Cargile said. “I asked if he’s dead or alive and he said he’s alive but unconscious.”
For Cargile’s young grandchildren, including 5-year-old Reese, the loss means no more cherished moments at the playground with their grandfather, who loved playing with them.
“I’m an only child. I was very close to my daddy, he’s who I called for everything,” Paige said. “Everything I know I learned from him. “This is the most horrific way you could lose anybody, especially somebody so close to you.”
Family members remember Cargile as a skilled handyman who could repair almost anything and took pleasure in spending time with his grandchildren. His daughter recalls fond memories of their time together, including accompanying him on his milk delivery routes and exploring old houses.
“I think some of my favorite memories would have to be growing up, we used to go plundering through old houses, and out in the woods, he took me everywhere with him,” Paige said.
The family is pleading for the driver responsible to come forward.
“I just wish they had stopped,” Paige said.
The family is asking anyone with information about the hit-and-run to contact police.
The family created a GoFundMe page.
