JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Revlon, the beauty products company, announced it will be closing its manufacturing facility on Jacksonville’s Westside, according to a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act (WARN) letter.

According to the May 16 letter, the facility’s closure will result in 127 employees being permanently laid off.

In the WARN letter to the Florida Department of Commerce, Revlon said layoffs at the facility on Overmyer Drive will start on July 18 and will continue for the next three months.

“The decision to terminate these operations is to streamline our business operations to ensure the long-term sustainability of our company,” the letter said.

The announcement of the Revlon facility’s closure came three weeks after C&S Wholesale Services, a grocery supplier, said it would be shutting down its distribution center in Baldwin.

According to the C&S Wholesale Services WARN letter, the center’s closure will result in 490 employees being laid off starting July 4.

“It’s always difficult to hear that layoffs are coming. No one really likes to hear that. It is something that is recurring,” said Brad Hershbein, Sr. Economist at Upjohn Institute for Employment Research.

Hershbein said 600 people being out of a job is a significant loss. However, he said in a city with a population of over 1 million people, these layoffs won’t crash the local economy.

But he did warn that those 600 people might be looking for a new job for a longer time.

“It is still going to be something where quite a few people who are working at the same establishment, the same place, plant, where many of them have similar skills, are all going to be looking for related types of jobs. There may be career changes for some people as they transition to a different type of employer,” Hershbein said.
