Duval County set for upgrades in new transportation plan

North Florida Transportation Planning Organization laying out 5-year TIP

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Duval County drivers may soon experience a significant enhancement to their daily commute.

The North Florida Transportation Planning Organization (TPO) is unveiling its five-year plan for the Transportation Improvement Program on Thursday.

This plan is expected to introduce new projects aimed at making local roads safer and more efficient.

TPO has an interactive map showing the projects that could be presented in Thursday’s presentation.

One of the key projects highlighted is the Kings Road Corridor.

The proposed improvements for the corridor will include the installation of light beacons at the S-Line crossing and the addition of two mini roundabouts at Fairfax Street and Tyler Street.

Other upgrades will include a section on I-95 south of the Emerson Street exit, all the way down to St. Johns County, as well as the Westside Beltway, where both sections will be expanded with different lanes.

Along Normandy Boulevard from New World to Cassat Avenue, work is expected to upgrade the area’s traffic lights to ease the congestion and delays.

The North Florida TPO serves as the independent regional transportation planning agency for Clay, Duval, Nassau and St. Johns counties. Under federal law, the TPO is mandated to develop an annual Transportation Improvement Plan, commonly referred to as TIP.

The timeline for these projects is set to run from 2025 through 2030. These initiatives are federally funded, with the Kings Road project expected to cost more than $3 million.

The public is invited to attend the presentation, which will be held on Zoom starting at 4:30 p.m.
