ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. – A tragic crash at the intersection of U.S. 1 North and Pine Island Road has sparked community calls for improved safety measures.
Before that accident, a signal warrant study was conducted by the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), and it was determined that a traffic signal was needed.

Last week, a person was trapped in a vehicle following a crash and later died at the hospital, according to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP).

St. Johns County Fire Rescue reported that firefighters and paramedics responded to the scene, located about six minutes southeast of County Road 210. Firefighters used specialized equipment to extricate the individual from the car around 8:45 a.m. Despite their efforts, the person was transported to the hospital in critical condition but did not survive.
In response to this tragic event, many community members have expressed their concerns about the safety of the intersection, with some calling it “dangerous.”

At the intersection, there is already equipment, poles, and a sign that reads that the project will be done by July.
The project is expected to cost more than $2.7 million.
