Man dies following shooting on Jacksonville’s Southside; suspect arrested: JSO

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A 45-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly shooting and killing a man on Saturday night on Jacksonville’s Southside, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office.

JSO said on Saturday, around 9 p.m., officers responded to reports of a shooting on Dorothea Road. Upon arrival, they found Russell Whipple, 68, suffering from gunshot wounds.

Whipple was taken to the hospital, where he would later die, JSO said.

After conducting their investigation, JSO said it identified Timothy Cherry as the shooter and arrested him, charging him with murder and attempted murder.

“Our hearts go out to Mr. Whipple’s friends and family. We will work with prosecutors to bring answers and closure,” the agency said.
