‘It’s all about the moms’: DONNA Mother’s Day 5K raises money for breast cancer research

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The DONNA Mother’s Day 5K race took place through the streets of Riverside to fundraise for breast cancer research.

The race kicked off at 8 a.m. from Friday Musicale on Oak Street. The organization’s mission is to provide financial support to families and individuals fighting breast cancer.

The nonprofit was started in 2003 by Mayor Donna Deegan. Every participant, whether running in person or virtually, they will receive a lotus flower-themed finisher medal, a finisher shirt, and a Donna goodie bag.

“It’s all about the moms,” Deegan said. “We’ve been doing this for many years now but today is really about celebrating moms and all they do...”

Runners will also receive a Donna “I’m running for” back bib presented by IQ Fiber.

After the race, runners will have access to the Donna Athletes’ Village, where a post-race survivorship celebration will be held. UF Health will also host a public forum over brunch.

According to the DONNA Foundation’s website, over 20,000 families have been helped, with over $6 million in financial services and over $3 million in supporting research.
