‘I can’t get down the steps’: Elderly Jacksonville apartment residents concerned over prolonged elevator outage

The issue is challenging for residents who rely on mobility aids

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Two residents at a Jacksonville apartment complex who are in their 80s are concerned over an elevator outage that won’t be repaired until the end of the month.

The outage has created significant challenges for those living on higher floors and residents who rely on mobility aids.

Peg Androski shared her experience since the elevator went out.

“I had a doctor appointment, and I go with my walker and my portable oxygen to go downstairs. I press the button, and it says out of order,” Androski said.

She had to reschedule her appointment due to the malfunction.

The management team of Integra River Run sent a letter to the affected residents.

We regret to inform you that building 1’s elevator will be out of service for necessary repairs starting May 2, 2025. Unfortunately our elevator service vendor is experiencing a backlog and will not be able to send a technician for approximately three weeks.

We understand how inconvenient this may be, especially for those higher floors, and we sincerely apologize for the disruption. Please rest assured that we are working closely with our service provider to complete the repairs as quickly and efficiently as possible.

If you have any questions or concerns during this period, please don’t hesitate to contact the front office. We greatly appreciate your patience and understanding as we work to restore full service.

Androski said she’s considered calling an ambulance for transportation to her medical appointments.

“We’re stuck here on the fourth floor. I can’t get down the steps to get in my car to go to the doctor,” she said.

While management did send the letter, Androski said she is frustrated over the lack of communication from the office.

“My niece called the office five times yesterday, and no one ever called us back,” she said.

Another resident expressed safety concerns, saying that they would be trapped if there were a fire.

Another resident said grocery shopping has become a challenge. She said she uses a grocery delivery service, but fears the deliverer won’t come up the stairs since the elevator isn’t working.

“I’m scared to death,” she said. “I couldn’t sleep last night worrying about it.”

Gerri Ellen Harmon said she could take the stairs, but she feels the pain the next day.

“I really paid for it, hurting all over,” Harmon said. “Then the thought of having to have a little cart for my groceries, the thought to lug the cart upstairs, up there, it’s just undoable.”

Residents said management should explore different ways to get the elevator repaired rather than wait for the vendor.

“We just want to feel safe and taken care of in our home,” a resident said.
