Nearly 500 people in our area will be without a job soon as a major distribution center in Baldwin will be shutting its doors.
C&S Wholesale Services, a grocery supplier, sent the state a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification last week, alerting them of their plan.
Starting July 4, 490 employees at C&S Wholesale Services will begin to be laid off from this distribution center in Baldwin, according to this notification sent to the state.
It says in part:
“This layoff will be permanent, and the Company’s operations at the location will permanently cease. None of the affected employees are represented by a union, and bumping rights... However, some employees may be offered the opportunity to transfer to other Company locations.”
None of the affected employees News4JAX was able to contact wanted to speak on camera or over the phone. But one agreed to answer our questions via text.
The man said he has worked for C&S Wholesale Services for almost 20 years, and he is close to retirement.
He said it’s very disappointing to know they are closing. He said the employees found out last Tuesday.
He went on to say he thought the layoffs were coming, and that “C&S is a great company with great benefits. I really enjoyed working for them.”
He said the employees were offered severance pay and the opportunity to transfer to another location.”
We reached out to the Mayor of Baldwin and other town officials, asking them what losing the plant would mean to the town. We are waiting to hear back.
