ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – The St. Augustine City Commission is in the process of making potential updates to the city’s noise ordinance.
St. Augustine has popular nightlife events happening year-round, and the current noise ordinance sets a maximum noise decibel level, which varies by time of day. Noise must be reduced after 10 p.m. on weeknights and after 11 p.m. on weekends.

The city will issue permits for public events to exceed the decibel limits, but those who violate the ordinance can get a fine of $100 for a first violation and $499 for any subsequent violations.
But the city has been consulting with an expert about making changes to both the rules and the enforcement of the noise ordinance.
The expert said a draft of the revised ordinance will be ready by May 7, and Assistant Police Chief Anthony Cuthbert said it would then be sent to the city attorney for a legal review.
Cuthbert said that keeps them on track to submit the final version of the ordinance by May 29, ahead of the City Commission’s first scheduled reading of the ordinance on June 9.
Cuthbert said that in anticipation of the updated ordinance, the St. Augustine Police Department has added four more noise meters and plans to train and certify most of its officers in how to use them.
Cuthbert is set to give an update on the progress of the noise ordinance revisions at the City Commission meeting on Monday night.
