JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The call for action for a Duval County inmate whose critical injuries led to his death in early April continued Tuesday as community activists came together in front of Jacksonville City Hall.
At least a dozen people protested for justice in the case of Charles Faggart, who died after what the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office called an incident at the Duval County jail involving nine correctional staff members on April 7.

He died days later.
People held up signs that read “Release the redated,” and “The badge is not shield for justice” as the crowd chanted “Justice for Charles” in front of city hall.
The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office released a partially redacted report and the names of the nine officers involved in the incident, but that did not provide full context of what led to the 31-year-old’s death.
The activist wanted the Jacksonville City Council to step in and ensure Faggart received justice.

“We’re here today to put pressure on the city council to ensure that they use their power to make sure that Charles gets justice,” Samuel Hunter with the Jacksonville Community Action Committee said. “We can no longer count on the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office to do their jobs to make sure that transparency and accountability is really given to the public and to the family.”
The incident that sent Faggart to the hospital led to the removal of nine corrections staff at the Duval County jail, and Jacksonville Sheriff T.K. Waters has asked the FBI to investigate.
