Tallahassee, Fla. – Members of the Florida State University College Democrats held a news conference with the House Democratic Office in Tallahassee on Tuesday.
“This tragedy is not a political statement; however, it becomes a political issue when poor policy fails to stop a completely preventable loss of life‚” the group’s president Madalyn Propst said in a statement.

The FSU College Democrats are asking that FSU put locks on all doors and provide training to all faculty and staff on active shooter response. Members are also asking the state legislature to add appropriations into the budget for mental health intervention programs and funding for active shooter response training on all college campuses.
In addition, the group is asking lawmakers to amend safe-storage laws to require safe storage protocols to be followed when there is any person in a household who cannot legally obtain a firearm, not just for minors under the age of 16.
Investigators are still searching for a motive in the shooting on FSU’s campus last Thursday. Two people were killed, and six others were injured when police say a 20-year-old student opened fire.
Police identified the alleged gunman as Phoenix Ikner, the son of a Leon County Sheriff’s deputy.
Doctors say all six hospitalized patients are expected to make a full recovery.
