JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A 51-year-old man who had been threatening to harm himself fired at least one shot at officers and was hit when four officers returned fire Sunday night, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office.

Chief Alan Parker said officers were called to Sandalwood Boulevard about four blocks south of Atlantic Boulevard just after 11 p.m. Sunday.

Parker said family members had called police about the man being armed and possibly wanting to harm himself.

When officers got to the scene, the man was sitting in a vehicle outside the house, and they told him to get out with his hands up. When he got out of the vehicle, he pointed the gun at officers and fired at least one shot, according to witnesses.

The officers fired back, hitting the man. Parker said they were able to disarm him at that point and rendered aid until medical personnel could take him to the hospital.

He was last listed in critical, but stable condition, and Parker said he was able to speak with investigators, sharing that he had been having long-standing relationship issues.

The man told police he was drinking wine Sunday night when he got out his pistol and fired off some rounds to “let off some steam,” Parker said.

News4JAX is not naming the man because of the reported mental health issues.

It was the sixth officer-involved shooting of the year, Parker said.

The officers involved will be placed on Administrative Leave and have been identified as the following:

  • Ofc. Brandon Creighton-Nelson ID# 73058
  • Ofc. Katelyn Hrkach ID# 84673
  • Ofc. Joseph Neighbor ID# 87250
  • Ofc. Vincent Davis, Jr ID# 87496

Per protocol, the State Attorney’s Office and JSO are investigating the circumstances of the shooting, and the officers will then undergo an administrative review.
