St. Johns County deputies investigate complaints of tire spikes near bicycle path in Ponte Vedra Beach

ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. – The St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office said it is investigating reports of tire spikes near a bicycle path in Nocatee.

SJSO said on Thursday night it had received two reports of punctured tires near the bicycle path at Crosswater Parkway and Bluewater Drive.

“It’s just been a little alarming,” Maureen McCluskey, a Nocatee resident said.

McCluskey said she first heard about the tire spikes from a post in one of her “mommy” Facebook groups.

Then, she heard about it again from one of her neighbors.

“My neighbor was one of the one whose children ran over one of them,” McCluskey said.

Since hearing about the spikes she’s made sure to be more careful and vigilant while on this path, so neither her nor her child don’t roll over one.

News4JAX also spoke spoke to a teen named Sebastian after his mom gave him permission to speak with us.

He said one of his friends was injured when they rolled over one of the spikes, and it popped their tire.

“So his tire got caught in one of the spikes and then he also landed on one of the spikes,” Sebastian said.

Sebastian says his friend had to have surgery but is recovering now.

SJSO said the Tolomato Community Development District was helping with cleanup and implemented measures to locate spikes.

Deputies asked the community to be careful when biking and using the path near Crosswater Parkway and Bluewater Drive.

If you locate anything suspicious, please contact the St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office (904) 824-8304.
