TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – According to a surgeon at Tallahassee Memorial Health, the six people who were injured when a gunman opened fire on the campus of Florida State University are in “fair” condition.

“I can tell you all of our victims, although some have serious injuries, are in fair condition. There are various injuries, but overall, in good spirits and doing well,” FSU alum and surgeon Dr. Brett Howard said.

Two men were killed and six others were injured Thursday in the shooting that sparked chaos at the university and prompted a huge police response around noon.

“We certainly deal with a lot of significant traumas. A mass event like this that’s right outside of our own university hits close to home, especially as a graduate,” Howard said.

Police said Phoenix Ikner, 20, was believed to be a current FSU student and opened fire around 11:50 a.m. near the student union. Ikner was shot by responding law enforcement and taken to a local hospital, officials said. No members of law enforcement were hurt.

Authorities have not released the identities of any of the victims.
