TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Law enforcement agencies are actively working to piece together why the suspected FSU gunman, Phoenix Ikner, shot multiple people.
Retired FBI Special Agent Jennifer Coffindaffer, gave insight into what role the agency will play in this investigation.
“The FBI’s main role is to assist law enforcement,” Coffindaffer said. “They assist by helping with interviews that’s going to be a big item here.”
MORE: FSU Shooting
To help gain knowledge of what happened during the FSU shooting, the FBI rolled out a website where people who know anything about the shooting can upload a description of what they saw.
There’s even an option to upload video and audio.
“The FBI tip line in past investigations and certainly currently, helps solve so many crimes,” Coffindaffer said. “It’s what people say, and people have seen, it’s how that’s communicated back to the FBI and law enforcement often that can crack a crime, or at least fill in a gap of a crime that they know, even if they have a subject.”
Coffindaffer said the tip line was helpful during the January 6th investigations as well as the Idaho College murders.
So here’s how it works: Coffindaffer said the tips come in and get sent to case agents.
She said agents will look at every single tip and review them.
In this current investigation, the FBI Jacksonville Public Affairs Officer said the tips will be sent to the Tallahassee Police Department.
The public affairs officer also said their agency will provide additional personnel, so the police department isn’t overwhelmed.
And Coffindaffer said this process helps put facts together so the suspected person “can be prosecuted successfully,” in the long run.
She also said no tip is too small to submit.
FBI Jacksonville said that they’ve received a lot of tips since the website has gone live.
