JSO said officers responded to reports of gunfire around 1 a.m. on Jan. 17 at the Circle K just east of Craven Road on Sunbeam Road.

Officers found 40-year-old Trey Carter in the gas station parking lot suffering from gunshot wounds. He died at the hospital.

JSO Sgt. Steve Rudlaff said Carter was in the store, but when he walked out, he got into an argument with two people.

Rudlaff said the argument intensified and Carter followed the two people across the parking lot as they continued to exchange words.

During the argument, one of them shot Carter, and then they ran off toward the west on Sunbeam Road.
