Man charged, 14-year-old cleared in Baker County armed robbery that left gas station clerk critically injured

MACCLENNY, Fla. – A man was charged with attempted second-degree murder after an armed robbery in Macclenny left a gas station clerk critically injured, according to the Baker County Sheriff’s Office.

The shooting happened Tuesday night at the Royalty Gas on US 90 and Eighth Street.

Kevin James Manley, 22, and his 14-year-old relative were confronted by the store clerk after they attempted to steal alcoholic beverages, deputies said.

Investigation revealed the 14-year-old did not participate in the robbery and tried to intervene and stop Manley from stealing.

According to the BCSO, a physical altercation started between the clerk and Manley, which ended in Manley pulling out a handgun and shooting the clerk.

The pair left the scene and started a vehicle chase with police. Deputies said stop sticks were deployed, which caused the car to crash on US-90 and Cow Pen Road.

Manley has been charged with robbery with a firearm, attempted second-degree murder and child neglect.

The store clerk was flown to UF Health Jacksonville for treatment in critical condition. A GoFundMe has been set up to help with his recovery.
