The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office responded to a call from Alquan Suydam’s aunt reporting that he had punched his pregnant girlfriend in the stomach while armed with a firearm on March 31 at Kings Trail Apartments in the San Jose area.
She also said that she had called multiple times before and didn’t understand why police didn’t take his gun away from him.
JSO said that three days prior, a similar report was made, but Suydam had fled the scene before the officers arrived.
The video shows officers Duhon, Shirk, and Melton arriving at the apartment and seeing Suydam in the passenger seat of a car.
As an officer approached, Suydam can be seen exiting the car and walking away from them with his hand in his pocket.
He didn’t comply with multiple verbal commands to show his hands and looked directly at the officers, and raised his right arm with the gun in his hand.
The officers then shot at Suydam, hitting him in his lower body. He dropped the gun, and officers took him into custody and attempted medical care.
He was taken to a hospital, where he died.
The State Attorney’s Office will independently review the incident to assess the legality of the officers’ actions. JSO will then conduct an internal review to ensure the officers acted within policy.
Then, a Response to Resistance Board will convene, and the findings will be submitted to the Sheriff for final review. Conclusions on the incident remain pending.
