St. Johns County School Board hosts special meeting to narrow down superintendent candidates

Thursday’s meeting will determine semifinalist candidates for the role

ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. – The St. Johns County School Board’s search for a new superintendent for the district has narrowed down to 26 candidates.

Current Superintendent Tim Forson will retire at the end of June, prompting the school board to seek his replacement.

Forson has served in the top role for nearly nine years and has been with the district for over 40 years.

A special meeting on Thursday at 4 p.m. will further narrow the field of candidates to semifinalists.

Beverly Slough, chair of the school board, mentioned there were originally 27 candidates, but one of them dropped out.

The search process began with a community survey, followed by an application period that closed at the end of March.

The school board has partnered with the Florida School Boards Association (FSBA) to identify qualified candidates and eliminate those who may not be suitable for the role.

“We are looking for somebody that can take our district even to the next level,” Slough said. “We’re looking for somebody with a strong background in curriculum, strong background in student achievement, an excellent communicator and somebody that can really help us to help our kids to excel to their highest levels.”

The special meeting will take place in the auditorium of the St. Johns County School District administrative building, located at 40 Orange St. in St. Augustine.

The public is welcome to attend in person or via WebEx. News4JAX will be at the meeting to provide updates.

Here is the upcoming schedule for the superintendent search:

  • Special Meeting: April 25, 4 p.m.
  • Superintendent Interviews: May 13, 8:30 a.m.
  • Finalists Meet and Greet: May 13, 6 p.m. at First Coast Technical College (2989 Collins Ave.)

According to the superintendent search timeline, the school board plans to select a candidate by May 20, with a projected start date on or before July 1 for the new hire.
