Fan may face criminal mischief charges for damage to light pole, Gainesville police says

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Following a University of Florida victory over the University of Houston in the NCAA National Championship basketball game Monday night, a Gators fan climbed a traffic light before falling into a crowd celebrating the win on the street, a video published by WCJB in Gainesville shows.

According to WCJB, the fan climbed on top of the traffic light at University Avenue and Buckman Drive/17th Street after the late-night win.

The video shows the fan on top of the pole, and then he is seen bouncing up and down before falling into the crowd.

According to WCJB, a person who was in the crowd at the time of the incident said the fan appeared to be OK after the fall.

Det. Lonnie Scott with the Gainesville Police Department said he believes the fan was taken to the hospital. His condition is still unclear.

Scott also said it is possible he may face criminal mischief charges because he damaged the light pole.

According to police, there were several arrests during the title celebration, which continued until almost 4 a.m.
