Massive Florida barn fire kills 21 horses

Flames in Marion County town were extinguished after 1 hour

MARION COUNTY, Fla. Twenty-one horses were killed early Tuesday when a Reddick barn caught fire, causing the roof to collapse, officials said.

The fire broke out around 3:30 a.m. in the 6000 block of Northwest 118th Street.

According to Marion County Fire Rescue, a 911 caller reported that the barn was ablaze and horses were trapped inside.

Firefighters arrived at 4:13 a.m. and found the 10,000-square-foot single-story barn engulfed in flames.

Officials said the roof had collapsed on top of the structure, and 21 horses died in the fire.

The fire was under control about an hour after firefighters arrived.

No civilians or firefighters were injured.

The State of Florida Bureau of Fire, Arson and Explosives Investigators and the Marion County Fire Marshal’s Office are investigating the cause and origin of the fire.
