JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office announced on Tuesday the removal of nine Duval County jail officers after an unspecified incident left an inmate in critical condition.

Sheriff T.K. Waters said in a brief news conference Tuesday evening that eight correctional officers and a correctional sergeant were removed from their positions and stripped of all their correction authority.

Waters said he would not give details about the incident or how the inmate was injured because it was still an open investigation.

“This is an active investigation, and because of the dynamic nature of this investigation, I will not share any detailed information about the incident at this time,” Waters said.

Waters also said he would not release the injured inmate’s identity or reason for being in jail.

The inmate was being treated at the hospital, he said.

“The safety and security of our inmates, of those housed in our jail, is a priority for this agency, and I assure the public that this investigative process will be thorough, competent and comprehensive,” Waters said.
