JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Going for the green.
Now that spring is here, with ample sunshine and warmer temperatures, many of us will start sprucing up our lawns.
Across Florida, there are more than 100 different ordinances written to address how and when people can apply fertilizer.
A recent study of Floridians revealed more than half of the people polled did not know if they live in one of the areas with a residential fertilizer ordinance. Twenty-two percent polled did know.
Stephanie Means of the University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences explained why proper fertilization is important and when people should fertilize or avoid applying.
Duval County has a fertilizer ordinance.
Means is also the Duval County Extension Florida-Friendly Landscaping program assistant.
She demonstrates how to do a soil test and read the fertilizer bag, including calibrating the spreader.
According to the survey, Weed and Feed was listed as the most commonly used fertilizer, but it really should not be used in Florida.
A webinar is scheduled for April 7 to help people, especially landscape professionals, educate others about residential fertilizer application.
It starts at 3 p.m. and all participants have to register.
