JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Before the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp take the field for their home opener Tuesday night, the team celebrated its newly renovated ballpark.
A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held at 10:30 a.m. at the brand-new Main Gate on Georgia Street.
“This is a really special day for Jacksonville, a really special day for baseball and our community and an enormous celebration of months, if not years, of a culmination of some incredible work,” said Ken Babby, owner and CEO of the Jumbo Shrimp.
Jacksonville Mayor Donna Deegan, VyStar Credit Union CEO Brian Wolfburg, and Major League Baseball executive Christopher Brumm were also in attendance.
“We look forward to many years of great baseball and entertainment ahead here at VyStar Ballpark, with tonight kicking off a new era of professional baseball in Jacksonville,” Brumm said.
VyStar CEO Brian Wolfburg said the goal of this partnership is to bring the community together and help revitalize downtown.
“We are helping to create a vibrant sports and entertainment district that will energize our downtown,” Wolfburg said.
The Jumbo Shrimp will face the Worcester Red Sox Tuesday night, with the first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
