JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Sunday’s domestic incident that ended in a deadly shooting in Jacksonville’s San Jose neighborhood marked the fifth police shooting so far this year, which is the highest number in the first three months of the year since 2016, according to data from the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office portal.

During the first quarter of 2024, there was one officer-involved shooting. In total, there were eight police shootings last year and 768,176 calls for service, JSO data shows. According to JSO, officer-involved shooting incidents accounted for .001% of all police calls in 2024.
The first officer-involved shooting of 2025 happened on Feb. 11. According to JSO, one of its officers shot a 29-year-old man after he failed to comply with orders and accelerated his vehicle toward the officer.
The second police shooting took place on March 10, when an off-duty JSO lieutenant shot into a semi-truck after “coming into contact” with the vehicle on I-95 South near Atlantic Boulevard. The details of this shooting were still unclear because the officer involved has not made a statement.
The third shooting involving a JSO officer happened on March 11. Officers shot a 53-year-old woman who fired a gun at them after they were called to a home near the Oceanway area by the woman’s husband, the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office said.
The fourth officer-involved shooting happened a day later, on March 12, when an attempted traffic stop ended with a man being killed and a JSO officer injured in a shootout in Northwest Jacksonville. JSO said the suspect was wearing a “bulletproof vest” and had two firearms in his car at the time of the shooting.
The fifth and most recent officer-involved shooting happened on Sunday. According to JSO, Alquan Suydam, 28, was waving a gun while “holding his girlfriend against her will” when the police were called around 7:45 p.m.
Police said Suydam was sitting in the vehicle, and when officers got out to make contact with him, he got out and began walking away with his hand in his pocket.
“Officers gave multiple commands for him to stop, ‘Show us your hands, show us your hands,’ and instead of just doing what he was told, he decided to pull his pistol out to point it at the officers,” JSO said.
Suydam was then shot multiple times. Twice in the leg, and once in the hip, JSO said. He was taken to a hospital, where he died.
JSO said Monday the shooting is still under investigation.
News4JAX asked JSO what it is doing in an effort to reduce officer-involved shootings and a spokesperson responded with an emailed statement: “Officers are trained to protect and serve the community as well as themselves. In terms of the recent “Officer Involved Incidents,” they are still active investigations.”
