JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office said a man died Sunday night after pointing a gun at police officers, which led to an officer-involved shooting.
According to the agency, Alquan Suydam, 28, was waving a gun while “holding his girlfriend against her will” when the police were called around 7:45 p.m.
JSO said officers had a description of Suydam’s vehicle from a similar incident that occurred two days prior, when his aunt called police. Because of that description, police were able to locate him in San Jose near Toledo Road, just west of Philips Highway.
When JSO arrived at the Kings Trail Apartments, they said Suydam was sitting in his vehicle. When officers got out to make contact with Suydam, he got out of his vehicle and began walking away with his hand in his pocket.
“Officers gave multiple commands for him to stop, ‘Show us your hands, show us your hands,’ and instead of just doing what he was told, he decided to pull his pistol out to point it at the officers,” JSO said.
Suydam was then shot multiple times. Twice in the leg, and once in the hip, JSO said. He was taken to a hospital, but he did not survive his injuries.
JSO said it is not aware of any injuries to Suydam’s girlfriend, who is pregnant.
According to JSO, this is the first officer-involved shooting for each of the three officers in this incident and the fifth for the agency this year.
An investigation into the incident by the state attorney is underway, JSO said.
In a post on X, JSO also said no officers were hurt in the incident.
