TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Florida lawmakers are aiming to redefine reckless driving and impose stricter penalties for so-called “super speeders” or “speed demons.”
Under House Bill 351, reckless driving would include exceeding the speed limit by 50 mph or more, operating a vehicle at speeds of 100 mph or more, and/or fleeing from law enforcement.

A first-time offender could face up to 90 days in jail and/or a fine of up to $500. For those with an additional conviction, the penalties could include up to six months in jail and/or a fine of at least $5,000. The court would also revoke the person’s driving privileges for one year.
Advocates of the proposal believe the changes will deter reckless drivers and make Florida roadways safer. Orange County Sheriff John Mina is among those pushing for the legislation. He says his deputies have seen a drastic rise in reckless speeding, with drivers going 30, 40, or even 50 miles per hour over the limit.
A companion bill is currently moving through the Florida Senate. If passed, the legislation is set to take effect on July 1, 2025.
