JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A new batch of hotels in Southwest Duval County, just north of the Clay County line, is raising questions about security in the area following years of crime issues at nearby hotels.
These hotels are located right across the street from the Westside Costco, about a mile from a row of hotels on Youngerman Circle—an area that has been plagued by crimes at hotels in recent years.

The owner of the relatively new Comfort Inn across from Costco told News4AX he sold his old hotel on Youngerman Circle in 2022 because of crime.
After he opened the new hotel, the city added a new cut-through road from Collins Road to Youngerman Circle called Parramore Road.
He said when that happened, there were some issues with the criminal element drifting toward his new hotel so he worked with JSO and hired security to stop it. He also worked with City Councilman Rachman Johnson to eliminate any crime issues.
On Monday, residents in the area told News4JAX things have improved in the past two years with fewer panhandlers and shootings.
“Let’s say this past six months I haven’t seen any,” Carmen said.
News4JAX Crime and Safety Analyst Tom Hackney said he used to patrol the area of Youngerman Circle for JSO and was very familiar with its past crime issues.

Hackney said “constant pressure” is what JSO, City Hall and business owners need to stay on top of any crime issues.
“To manage who’s there, get rid of problems as soon as they come. Work with the council, work with the sheriff’s office to keep that pressure on these areas,” Hackney said.
Hackney added both the City and JSO know how important it is to keep both tourists and the hotel developers happy, otherwise they stop investing money in our city.
Councilman Johnson shared the statement below about hotels and growth on the Westside.
“Jacksonville’s District 14 is on a trajectory of positive transformation, and the Youngerman Circle area is no exception.
While crime has been a concern in the past, our collective efforts—combining proactive law enforcement, engaged business owners, and community-driven initiatives—are making a tangible difference.
Crime across the district, including this area, has been steadily declining. The data from 2024 confirms what residents and visitors are beginning to see firsthand—our neighborhoods are safer, and the district is even more welcoming.
Youngerman Circle’s proximity to major highways, the county line, and high-traffic businesses presents unique challenges. However, the area is not a violent crime hotspot. Instead, it is an area where vigilance and collaboration are paying off.
A key driver of this progress is the commitment of local hotel owners who are working together and engaging with law enforcement and community leaders to create an environment that prioritizes safety and hospitality. Through enhanced security measures, increased communication, and investment in crime-prevention programs, these business owners are not just improving their properties—they are reshaping the perception of the area.
At the same time, new hotel developments near Costco signal a growing confidence in the area’s potential. These investments reflect a belief in Jacksonville as a thriving destination where visitors and residents can experience quality accommodations and a welcoming atmosphere.
This is more than just about lowering crime statistics; it’s about ensuring that every visitor who comes to Jacksonville—whether for business or leisure—feels secure and valued. The progress we’ve made is proof that when law enforcement, businesses, and the community work together, we create safer streets, stronger neighborhoods, and a brighter future for Jacksonville.”
