‘The end of the post office’: Georgia woman having issues with mail delivery not confident USPS cuts will help service

Postmaster General Louis DeJoy plans to cut 10,000 workers

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Fewer workers and a smaller budget.

Those could be some of the changes that could be coming to the United States Postal Service (USPS).

According to the Associated Press, Postmaster Louis DeJoy sent a letter to members of Congress Thursday. It said the postal service plans to work with the Department of Government Efficiency or DOGE.

This partnership could include cutting 10,000 workers, through a 30-day voluntary early retirement program.

It could also include USPS working to cut billions of dollars from its budget.

The move is aimed at helping USPS address its problems of staying afloat.

From 2007 to 2020, the Postal Service accumulated $87 billion in losses.

Over the last year News4JAX has reported about the problems residents in Georgia and Northeast Florida have experienced with this delayed mail.

Barbara Castaldi, a Brunswick resident, is someone who has experienced late mail from the postal service.

It’s a problem she’s experienced for the last 8 months.

“I haven’t received mail,” Castaldi said. “I’ve had packages returned because they’ve said that it wasn’t deliverable.”

She mentioned the problems first started when she moved from St. Simons to Brunswick.

Castaldi also said she doesn’t feel like the postal service laying off people is going to benefit anyone.

“I think it’s going to be ridiculous,” Castaldi said. “I think that’s the end of the post office.”

News4JAX also spoke to a USPS customer off camera, he said he didn’t feel like the job cuts would impact delivery service.

News4JAX reached out to USPS for comment on this story, we’re waiting to hear back.
