According to JSO, an individual was removing a gun from the trunk of a vehicle when it discharged and hit the woman in the chest.
She was taken to the hospital, where she died from her injuries.
A person of interest was detained, and JSO said there was no further threat to the community.
Police activity prompted Ribault High School and Sallye B. Mathis Elementary to go on lockdown.
Duval County Public Schools sent the following message to inform parents of the situation.
“Hello Ribault High and Sallye B. Mathis Elementary families. This is Duval County Public Schools. All students and staff are safe, but both the schools are on a lockdown due to reports of gun shots in the area. As a reminder, no one is allowed to enter or leave the school building during a lockdown for the safety of students and staff. Please standby for updates.”
