WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – State and local officials gathered in Winter Haven to announce a rail infrastructure project aimed at expanding freight efficiency and fueling economic growth in Polk County.
Gov. Ron DeSantis highlighted the impact of a new rail spur connecting the Winter Haven logistics park.
The project, supported by state grants and public-private partnerships with companies like CSX and local businesses, aims to reduce truck congestion, create jobs, and strengthen Florida’s manufacturing sector.
At the press conference, DeSantis highlighted Florida’s economic growth of over 30% since he took office, asserting that the state leads among larger economies.
He noted that while Idaho’s growth might be slightly higher, its population is smaller than Polk County’s.
“Idaho has less people than Polk County does, so it’s a little bit different comparison - it’s just not the same as comparing to a mature economy,” DeSantis said.
Alex Kelly, Florida’s Secretary of Commerce and Bruce Lyon, President of the Winter Haven Economic Development Council joined DeSantis at the podium.
“This project is a model for strategic, targeted investment,” said Kelly.
“With the addition of rail service, we’re not only improving local workforce opportunities but also enhancing the statewide supply chain.”
The new rail connection is expected to attract companies that may want to expand their distribution centers in the area.
“This is an investment in the future,” said Lyon. “We’re making Polk County a key player in Florida’s economy.”
As the project moves forward, leaders are optimistic about continued growth, hinting at major upcoming announcements that will further solidify Polk County’s status as a manufacturing and logistics powerhouse.
