JAX set to soar with new terminal, more gates, improved amenities for smoother flight experience

Airport on Jacksonville’s Northside undergoing $440 million expansion, modernization project

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Jacksonville International Airport consistently scores high marks for quality and was recently ranked as the second-best medium hub in North America.

Only Indianapolis International ranked higher in the 2024 J.D. Power North America Airport Satisfaction Study.

But to keep travelers happy, officials know JAX needs some upgrades.

So the $440 million expansion and modernization project continues. It includes a new concourse, additional gates and enhanced amenities.

Right now, JAX has one main terminal and two concourses—A and C. Each has 10 gates.

When the airport expansion is complete, the airport will have a total of at least 20.

Because more business and leisure travelers are flying out of JAX, work is underway on a third terminal—Concourse B. It will initially add six gates but can accommodate as many as four more.

Work on it should be complete by December 2026.

This will allow the airport to handle more flights, reduce congestion during peak travel times and keep up with growth.

JAX saw record-breaking travel in 2024. More than 7.6 million passengers moved through the airport last year. That’s an increase of 2.8% in passenger traffic from 2023 when 7.4 million passengers set the previous record.

And that number is only expected to grow.

Parking is also getting a major upgrade. A new multi-level parking garage will add 2,000 spaces, easing the current shortage.

Once all the changes are complete, travelers will benefit from shorter security lines, more seating, a wider variety of food and shopping options, and more parking.

It’s a win for the airlines, too. With more gates and improved infrastructure, more flights and destinations are being added.

The expansion also provides a boost to the economy, creating thousands of jobs during construction and adding permanent positions once the project is complete.
