On Tuesday at 6 p.m., the Duval County School Board is holding a regular board meeting and a public hearing for a policy revision regarding faculty fraternization with students as part of policy 6.84.
Some of the language changes that are proposed to the policy include:
- Avoiding the appearance of impropriety and not sending private messages to students
- Only using district-approved communication tools and applications to communicate with students
- Not being alone with students, and if they must be alone, getting approval first.
- Not accept documents, information or material from students that can be considered obscene, vulgar or sexually suggestive. And if they do report it immediately
The changes come in the wake of multiple accusations and cases of misconduct with teachers at Douglas Anderson. The most reported on included longtime teacher Jeffery Clayton.
In June, Clayton was sentenced to 10 years in prison, which will be followed by three years of probation.
During his trial, a detective testified that phone records revealed late-night FaceTime calls and more than 1,000 text messages between the 65-year-old teacher and a 16-year-old, which relates back to the revision asking employees not to send private messages to students.
