ATLANTIC BEACH, Fla. – The Atlantic Beach City Commission will start the process of adopting new rules regarding electronic bikes on the road.
In a report submitted by Chief of Police Victor Gualillo, he said, “Cities throughout Florida, and specifically Northeast Florida, are seeing repeated instances where the unregulated operation of these motorized devices is creating a hazard to public safety such that the creation of local laws governing their use is prudent and necessary.”

Gualillo offered commissioners a draft ordinance that provides regulations for motorized devices within a variety of areas including city parks and city trail networks. He added that it would limit e-bikes to a maximum speed of 10 mph on city sidewalks.
Any violations could result in a $50 civil fine.
Anyone riding within city limits has to follow traffic regulations, traffic signals and stop signs.
The ordinance will be introduced at Atlantic Beach City Hall at the 6 p.m. meeting.
The second and final reading will be on March 10.
