“THE EAGLE HAS LANDED!” the Glynn County Board of Commissioners said on social media. “Glynn County Police, GC Fire Rescue, GC Sheriff’s Office - along with Brunswick Police, Brunswick Fire & GSP - proud to join in the Super Bowl parade for Darius “Big Play” Slay...Welcome home and congratulations Darius Slay!”

“It means a lot,” Slay explained. “Coming from a small city, my family, my city supporting me, it’s a great feeling...it’s one of my dreams come true.”

The former second-round pick received a key to the city of Brunswick during the ceremony and said that he hopes it serves as an inspiration to the youth of what they can achieve by following his example.

“I was going down the wrong path for a minute,” Slay said. “But I got some good guidance and know I could let them know that it’s possible to make it.”

He also said that winning the Super Bowl “settled in about a week later” and that although it took him 12 years to finally get it, he’s extremely appreciative for the journey and called it “one of the best feelings” he’s ever experienced.

“It was a great ride, a great journey, and it’s good to be a Super Bowl champ,” he said.

Mayor of Brunswick Cosby Johnson said the day means “everything,” calling Slay a “pillar” in the Brunswick community and a “champion in our heart.”

“To celebrate [Darius] as a Super Bowl champion is only a testament to all of his hard work and everything he’s given to us as a community,” he said, adding that the turnout for the event proves what Slay means to the city.

“We are beyond thankful for Slay’s presence, and I knew we were gonna show up and show out,” Johnson said.
